Takiguchi

Takiguchi (滝口) refers to a historical position within the Japanese Imperial Guard, specifically during the Heian period (794-1185). The Takiguchi were a group of guards responsible for protecting the Imperial Palace, specifically the Seiryōden (清涼殿), one of the main buildings within the palace complex. They were known for their distinctive uniforms and their role in maintaining security and order within the palace grounds. The Takiguchi were typically drawn from lower-ranking samurai families and were considered a prestigious post for those aspiring to higher ranks. Their duties included patrolling the palace, guarding entrances, and assisting in ceremonial functions. The name "Takiguchi" literally translates to "waterfall mouth," and its origins are not definitively known, but some theories suggest it may relate to a location within the palace grounds near a waterfall or a water feature. The position gradually declined in importance as the political landscape of Japan changed, particularly with the rise of the shogunate and the diminished power of the Imperial Court.
