Naya Daur (Hindi: नया दौर, translation: New Era) is a 1957 Indian Hindi-language film directed by B.R. Chopra. The film stars Dilip Kumar, Vyjayanthimala, Ajit Khan, Jeevan, Johnny Walker, and Chand Usmani. It revolves around the conflict between traditional manual labor and the emerging industrialization of India following its independence.
The story is set in a rural village where a hardworking blacksmith, Shankar (Dilip Kumar), leads a simple life alongside his community. The arrival of a wealthy and ambitious man, Kundan (Ajit Khan), with his modern machinery threatens their traditional way of life. Kundan introduces a bus service, undermining the bullock cart drivers, and a mechanical crusher, putting the blacksmiths out of work.
A competition is proposed between Shankar and Kundan to determine the supremacy of man versus machine. Shankar, representing the traditional methods, challenges Kundan to a race: Shankar and his team transporting goods in a bullock cart versus Kundan driving his bus.
