USS Patuxent (AO-44)

The USS Patuxent (AO-44) was a Cimarron-class fleet oiler acquired by the U.S. Navy during World War II. She was tasked with transporting fuel to ships in the fleet, and participated in numerous operations throughout the Pacific Theater.

Laid down on 22 October 1942 at Bethlehem Sparrows Point Shipyard, Sparrows Point, Maryland, she was launched on 27 May 1943, sponsored by Mrs. B.H. Willis, and commissioned on 30 October 1943, Commander John E. Wooding in command.

Following shakedown and training, Patuxent sailed to the Pacific, arriving at Pearl Harbor on 11 February 1944. She commenced fueling operations, providing support for the Fast Carrier Task Force during operations in the Marshall Islands, including Eniwetok, Kwajalein, and Majuro. She then supported operations in the Marianas, including Saipan, Guam, and Tinian.

During the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, Patuxent played a crucial role in replenishing the fuel of the task force, enabling them to pursue the retreating Japanese fleet. She continued to provide fuel support for operations in the Philippines, including Leyte Gulf and Lingayen Gulf.

After the war, Patuxent participated in the occupation of Japan and continued to serve the Navy in various capacities. She was decommissioned on 19 April 1968 and struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 16 May 1968. She was sold for scrap on 6 March 1969.

Patuxent received nine battle stars for her World War II service.
