Evan Davies (Independent minister)

Evan Davies (1769-1849) was a prominent Welsh Independent (Congregational) minister, best known for his long tenure at Ebenezer Chapel in Swansea. Born in Llangeler, Carmarthenshire, Wales, he underwent a religious conversion experience as a young man and subsequently dedicated his life to ministry.

Davies received his theological training at the Presbyterian College, Carmarthen. In 1795, he was ordained and became the minister of Ebenezer Chapel, where he served for over fifty years until his death. His ministry was characterized by its fervent preaching, emphasis on personal piety, and considerable influence within Welsh nonconformity. He was considered an eloquent and powerful orator, drawing large congregations to his services.

Beyond his pastoral duties, Davies played an active role in the wider religious and social life of Wales. He was a strong advocate for education and helped establish several schools in the Swansea area. He was also a leading figure in the Congregational Union of England and Wales. Davies was respected for his integrity, humility, and commitment to the Gospel. His legacy lies in his long and impactful ministry, contributing significantly to the growth and development of Welsh nonconformity in the 19th century.
