History
The station first signed on the air on June 4, 1961, as KTNT-TV, owned by the Tacoma News Tribune (KTNT). Originally an independent station, it later affiliated with the DuMont Television Network. After DuMont ceased operations in 1956, KTNT-TV remained independent. In 1975, the station was sold and its call letters changed to KSTW. It affiliated with various networks over the years, including CBS and NBC. In 1988, KSTW became a charter affiliate of the Prime Time Entertainment Network (PTEN).
In 1995, the station was acquired by Tribune Broadcasting. On January 20, 1997, KSTW became a Fox affiliate, replacing KPTV (which became a UPN affiliate and later a MyNetworkTV station) in the Seattle market. As part of the affiliation agreement, Tribune Broadcasting acquired KPTV from Chris-Craft Industries/United Television. At the same time, KSTW's call letters were changed to KCPQ to reflect its new Fox affiliation – the "Q" being a phonetic reference to Fox.
In 2019, Tribune Broadcasting was acquired by Nexstar Media Group. In 2020, Nexstar sold KCPQ to Fox Television Stations as part of a larger deal to acquire Tribune's ownership stake in WGN America.
