Edward Wynne (colonial administrator)

Edward Wynne (fl. 17th century) was an early colonial administrator in North America, notable for his brief tenure as the Governor of the failed Roanoke Colony.

Wynne was appointed Governor of the "Lost Colony" of Roanoke Island, sent by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1587. The voyage's primary purpose was to establish a self-sufficient colony. Wynne’s leadership was intended to oversee the establishment of the colony and its integration with the indigenous population.

However, the colony suffered from shortages and internal disputes. After a short period, Wynne returned to England later in 1587, leaving behind a settlement of men, women, and children under the leadership of John White.

When John White eventually returned to Roanoke in 1590, he found the colony deserted, with no trace of the colonists except for the word "CROATOAN" carved into a post, leading to enduring mysteries regarding the colonists' fate. Due to the short period of Wynne's Governorship and the colony's ultimate failure, historical records relating specifically to his actions and decisions are scarce. His role is primarily remembered within the broader context of the Roanoke mystery.
