Peter Newcome (antiquary)

Peter Newcome (1727-1797) was an English clergyman and antiquarian. He served as the Rector of Shenley, Hertfordshire from 1763 until his death. Newcome is primarily remembered for his historical and genealogical research, particularly regarding the history of Hertfordshire and its prominent families.

His most significant work is considered to be "The History of the Abbey of St. Alban," published in 1793. This volume provides a detailed account of the Abbey's history, architecture, and notable figures. It includes transcriptions of charters and other historical documents, making it a valuable resource for researchers of medieval Hertfordshire.

Beyond his work on St. Alban's Abbey, Newcome compiled extensive genealogical collections related to Hertfordshire families. While much of this material remained unpublished during his lifetime, it has served as a resource for later historians and genealogists. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, reflecting his standing within the antiquarian community of his time. His manuscript collections are held in various archives, including the British Library and the Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies.
