Fallen Dragon

A Fallen Dragon typically refers to a dragon, in fictional settings (primarily fantasy and science fiction), that has undergone a significant moral or physical degradation, or both. The term implies a loss of status, power, or virtue from a previous, more exalted state. The specifics of this "fall" vary widely depending on the lore of the particular fictional universe.

The concept can encompass several different interpretations:

  • Corruption: A dragon, originally benevolent or neutral, succumbs to dark influences such as greed, malevolent magic, or the influence of a powerful evil entity. This corruption often manifests physically as well, with the dragon's scales becoming discolored, its breath weapon changing, and its overall appearance becoming more menacing.

  • Weakening: A once-powerful dragon may be weakened by injury, disease, or the loss of magical abilities. This can result in the dragon becoming less formidable, vulnerable to hunters, and forced to adopt a less noble lifestyle to survive. Sometimes, this weakening is accompanied by a loss of sanity.

  • Exile/Degradation: A dragon may be banished from its kind or its former social standing due to transgression or failure. This might involve losing its hoard, its territory, or its inherent magical abilities. The dragon then becomes a pariah, often bitter and vengeful.

  • Mortality/Death: In some universes where dragons are normally immortal or extremely long-lived, a "fallen dragon" might simply refer to one that has died. The death itself could be significant, perhaps tied to a prophecy or a major historical event. In some interpretations, becoming a dracolich (an undead dragon) would also qualify as a fallen state.

The term is frequently used in role-playing games, fantasy literature, and video games. The characteristics and motivations of a fallen dragon often make it a compelling antagonist or a tragic figure, depending on the narrative. The "fall" from grace adds depth to the creature, exploring themes of power, corruption, redemption, and the consequences of one's actions.
