Buraco das Araras (Mato Grosso do Sul)

The Buraco das Araras, located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, is a massive sinkhole known for its vibrant ecosystem and its significant population of red-and-green macaws (Ara chloropterus), known locally as araras. The name translates to "Macaw Hole."

The sinkhole is approximately 100 meters deep and 500 meters in circumference. It formed through the dissolution of limestone rock over time, a process common in karst landscapes. This process created a dramatic geological formation that provides a unique habitat.

The Buraco das Araras is a popular ecotourism destination. Visitors can observe the macaws in their natural habitat, as well as a variety of other bird species, reptiles, and small mammals. Guided tours are available that allow visitors to descend into the sinkhole via a rope system, offering a closer look at the flora and fauna. Viewing platforms are also situated at the rim of the sinkhole.

The ecosystem within the Buraco das Araras is relatively isolated, creating a distinct environment. The bottom of the sinkhole contains a lake and lush vegetation, supported by the humid microclimate. Conservation efforts are in place to protect the area and its biodiversity from the impacts of tourism and other human activities. The area is privately owned but accessible for tourism under controlled conditions.
