Uvs Lake

Uvs Lake (also Uvs Nuur) is a large, shallow, and highly saline lake located in a closed basin of the same name, the Uvs Nuur Basin, in Mongolia and Russia. It is the largest lake in Mongolia by surface area, covering approximately 3,350 square kilometers. The lake is part of the Uvs Nuur Basin Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 2003.

The lake's salinity varies depending on the inflow of freshwater from rivers and precipitation, but it is generally hypersaline, lacking an outlet. Several rivers feed into Uvs Lake, including the Tes, Nariin Gol, and Khovd rivers. The lake's water level fluctuates considerably over time due to variations in precipitation and river flow.

Uvs Lake and its surrounding basin contain a diverse range of ecosystems, including desert, semi-desert, grasslands, mountains, and wetlands. This ecological variety supports a wide range of flora and fauna, including many endangered species. The area is an important habitat for migrating birds, particularly waterfowl, as well as a refuge for snow leopards, argali sheep, and ibex.

The surrounding Uvs Nuur Basin is also rich in archaeological sites, with evidence of human habitation dating back thousands of years. The area's cultural significance adds to its importance as a protected area. The harsh climate and remote location have helped preserve the lake's natural environment, making it a valuable site for scientific research and conservation efforts.
