Sabicas

Agustín Castellón Campos (March 18, 1912 – April 14, 1990), known professionally as Sabicas, was a Spanish flamenco guitarist. He is widely considered one of the greatest flamenco guitarists of all time. Born in Pamplona, Spain, Sabicas began playing guitar at a young age and quickly gained recognition for his virtuosity and innovative approach to flamenco music.

Sabicas revolutionized flamenco guitar playing through his technical skill, speed, and improvisational abilities. He significantly expanded the repertoire of flamenco guitar and incorporated elements of other musical genres, such as jazz and classical music, into his performances. He also developed new techniques, including the use of picado (rest-stroke scales) and arpeggios at unprecedented speeds.

During the Spanish Civil War, Sabicas left Spain and eventually settled in Mexico City before moving to New York City in the late 1950s. He spent much of his career outside of Spain, popularizing flamenco guitar internationally through his recordings, concerts, and collaborations with other musicians. He recorded extensively, releasing numerous albums that are considered essential listening for flamenco guitar aficionados.

Sabicas's influence on subsequent generations of flamenco guitarists is undeniable. His innovative techniques and musical concepts have been widely adopted and continue to inspire players today. He died in New York City in 1990, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most important and influential figures in the history of flamenco guitar.
