The Farm (San Francisco)

The Farm (San Francisco), more commonly known as simply "The Farm," was a communal living and alternative education center located in San Francisco during the 1970s and early 1980s. It was founded by Greg Brodsky, also known as “Brother Jud,” and attracted a diverse group of individuals interested in communal living, spiritual exploration, and alternative social structures.

The Farm was characterized by its emphasis on shared resources, vegetarianism, natural childbirth, and a unique blend of Eastern philosophy, New Age spirituality, and social activism. Members participated in a variety of activities, including gardening, construction, meditation, and educational workshops. The community operated on a system of consensus-based decision-making.

One of the central aspects of The Farm was its educational program, which catered to both children and adults. It focused on experiential learning, self-discovery, and the development of practical skills. The educational philosophy was influenced by thinkers such as A.S. Neill and emphasized freedom, creativity, and personal responsibility.

The Farm ultimately dissolved in the early 1980s due to a combination of internal challenges, financial difficulties, and external pressures. While relatively short-lived, The Farm left a lasting impact on the San Francisco counterculture and continues to be remembered as an experiment in intentional community and alternative living.
