Historically, Uspallata served as an important resting point along the trade route between Argentina and Chile. Its strategic location in the Uspallata Valley made it a crucial stop for travelers and merchants traversing the mountain passes.

Today, Uspallata is a popular tourist destination. The town offers a variety of activities including hiking, horseback riding, and skiing (during the winter months). The surrounding landscape is characterized by dramatic mountain scenery, including the Aconcagua Provincial Park, home to Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas.
