Southeast (Washington, D.C.)
Southeast is one of the four quadrants of Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. It is located south of East Capitol Street and east of South Capitol Street. The White House and the United States Capitol are not located in Southeast. The area encompasses a diverse range of neighborhoods, from historic districts to rapidly developing areas.
Key features of Southeast include:
- Nationals Park: Home of the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball team.
- The Yards Park: A waterfront park on the Anacostia River, featuring green spaces, restaurants, and recreational activities.
- Barracks Row: A historic commercial district along 8th Street SE, known for its restaurants and shops.
- The Navy Yard: A former naval facility undergoing significant redevelopment, including residential, commercial, and cultural spaces.
- Eastern Market: A historic public market offering a variety of food vendors, crafts, and antiques.
- The Anacostia River: Forming a significant geographic boundary and offering waterfront access and recreational opportunities.
Southeast D.C. has experienced significant changes in recent years, with considerable development and gentrification occurring in some neighborhoods, particularly those closest to the Anacostia River and the Navy Yard. This has led to both economic growth and concerns about affordability and displacement for long-time residents. The quadrant is served by several Metro stations, including those along the Green, Blue, and Orange lines, facilitating access to other parts of the city. It is governed administratively as part of the District of Columbia, overseen by the Mayor and the Council of the District of Columbia.
