Seán Ó Neachtain (poet)

Seán Ó Neachtain (flourished late 17th/early 18th century) was an Irish language poet and scribe from County Galway.

Little definitive biographical information exists about Seán Ó Neachtain. He is generally believed to have been a member of a family of scribes and poets, possibly connected to the Uí Eachthigheirn (O'Hegarty) sept of the Síol Anmchadha lineage in south Galway. His floruit is estimated to be from the late 17th century to the early 18th century, based on manuscript dates and content.

Ó Neachtain's surviving work consists primarily of poems and transcriptions of older texts. He is known for his elegies, religious poems, and love poems. Some of his work displays a keen awareness of the political and social upheavals of the time, reflecting the decline of Gaelic culture and the increasing dominance of English rule in Ireland. He is also recognized for his meticulous scribal work, preserving important literary and historical materials in the Irish language. His manuscripts are valuable sources for the study of Irish literature and history of the period. His work can be found in collections held by the Royal Irish Academy, the National Library of Ireland, and other institutions. Further research is ongoing to identify more of his works and establish a more complete picture of his life and literary activities.
