County Westmeath (Parliament of Ireland constituency)
County Westmeath was a constituency that returned members to the Parliament of Ireland until its abolition on 1 January 1801. It represented the geographical county of Westmeath.
Typically, the constituency returned two Members of Parliament (MPs). From 1603 until 1782, Roman Catholics were excluded from voting. The parliamentary borough of Athlone, located within County Westmeath, also returned its own members.
Notable individuals who served as MPs for County Westmeath included prominent members of Irish gentry families. The influence of powerful landowners often played a significant role in the election process. Records of the constituency's representatives provide insights into the political landscape and power dynamics of the time. The constituency’s history reflects the wider political and social changes occurring in Ireland during the 17th and 18th centuries, including the impact of the Penal Laws and the growing movement for Irish legislative independence.
