Doug Yule

Doug Yule (born February 25, 1947) is an American musician, best known as a member of the Velvet Underground from 1968 to 1973.

Yule joined the Velvet Underground in late 1968, replacing founding member John Cale. He contributed significantly to the band's sound, playing bass, keyboards, and occasionally singing lead vocals. His first album appearance with the band was on their self-titled third album, The Velvet Underground (1969), where he played bass, organ and provided backing vocals. He took on a more prominent role on Loaded (1970), contributing lead vocals to several tracks, including "Sweet Jane" (shared with Lou Reed) and "New Age".

Following Lou Reed's departure from the band in 1970, Yule became the de facto leader of the Velvet Underground. He oversaw the recording of the album Squeeze (1973), the final album released under the Velvet Underground name. Squeeze is generally considered a Doug Yule solo album recorded with various session musicians under the band’s name.

After the Velvet Underground, Yule worked as a carpenter and luthier. He occasionally performed and recorded music. In the 1990s, he participated in the brief Velvet Underground reunion. More recently he has played in bands in the Boston area.
