Jōdo-ji (Matsuyama)
Jōdo-ji is a Buddhist temple located in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. It is Temple 49 on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, a route of 88 temples associated with the Buddhist monk Kūkai (Kōbō-Daishi).
The temple's main hall enshrines a statue of Amida Nyorai (Amitābha Buddha). Jōdo-ji is said to have been founded by Gyōki during the Nara period. Legend states that Kōbō-Daishi, during his travels, prayed for the souls of deceased animals at this location.
Key features of Jōdo-ji include its main hall, Daishi hall dedicated to Kōbō-Daishi, and the bell tower. Pilgrims often visit to pay respects and offer prayers. The temple also provides accommodation for pilgrims undertaking the Shikoku Pilgrimage.
