Fashion (horse)
Fashion was a prominent American Thoroughbred racemare of the mid-19th century, known for her speed and rivalry with the horse Boston. Foaled in 1837, Fashion was sired by Trustee, out of Bonnets o' Blue. She was owned and trained by William Gibbons of New Jersey.
Fashion gained widespread fame through a highly publicized match race against Boston in 1842, held at the Union Course on Long Island. The race, a best-of-three heats contest, attracted a massive crowd and significant wagering. Despite Boston's reputation as a dominant force in American racing, Fashion defeated him in two straight heats, solidifying her place as one of the leading racehorses of her era.
Fashion's victory over Boston was significant not only for its sporting implications but also for its symbolic value. It was viewed by some as a victory for the North (represented by Fashion and her New York venue) over the South (represented by Boston).
Beyond the Boston match, Fashion had a successful racing career, winning numerous other races. She was known for her stamina and consistency. She remains a notable figure in the history of American Thoroughbred racing.
