James R. Barker (businessman)
James R. Barker (born 1935) is an American businessman, most notably known for his long career in the Great Lakes shipping industry. He held leadership positions in several major shipping companies, contributing significantly to the modernization and development of the industry during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
Barker served as chairman and CEO of Interlake Steamship Company, a prominent operator of Great Lakes freighters. He was instrumental in the design and construction of new, larger, and more efficient vessels that helped to improve the productivity of iron ore, coal, and limestone transport across the Great Lakes. These vessels, often referred to as "1,000-footers," are among the largest ships operating on the Great Lakes.
