Darius (son of Artaxerxes II)

Darius, son of Artaxerxes II Mnemon of Persia, was a prominent figure in Achaemenid history, primarily known for his rebellion against his father. He was the eldest legitimate son of Artaxerxes II and Queen Stateira. Due to his position as the crown prince, he expected to succeed his father to the Persian throne.

Darius’ ambition and impatience led him to conspire against Artaxerxes II. He plotted to assassinate his father and seize the throne for himself. The conspiracy involved numerous courtiers and officials.

However, the plot was uncovered, and Darius was apprehended before he could carry out his regicide. Artaxerxes II, upon discovering his son’s treachery, had Darius executed. This execution occurred sometime in the later years of Artaxerxes II’s reign, likely in the 360s BCE.

Darius's death significantly altered the line of succession, ultimately paving the way for Artaxerxes III Ochus to ascend the throne upon Artaxerxes II's death. Darius’s failed rebellion highlights the intense power struggles within the Achaemenid court and the challenges faced by the aging Artaxerxes II in maintaining control over his vast empire and ambitious sons.
