Road 97 (Iran)
Road 97, also known as the Haraz Road, is one of the most important roads in Iran, connecting Tehran to the Caspian Sea coast. It traverses a mountainous region, primarily through the Alborz mountain range, offering scenic views but also presenting challenging driving conditions.
The Haraz Road is a vital transportation artery, facilitating the movement of goods and people between the capital city and the northern provinces of Mazandaran and Gilan. This region is popular for tourism, agriculture, and industry, all of which rely heavily on efficient transport.
Construction of the road began in the early 20th century during the reign of Reza Shah Pahlavi and has undergone numerous improvements and expansions over the years. The road is known for its tunnels, bridges, and winding sections, and it experiences significant traffic, especially during holidays and peak seasons. Safety is a persistent concern due to the mountainous terrain, weather conditions, and heavy traffic volume. Efforts are continuously being made to improve the road's infrastructure and safety measures.
