Hillsborough railway station (Northern Ireland)

Hillsborough railway station is a former railway station located in Hillsborough, County Down, Northern Ireland. It served the town of Hillsborough and the surrounding area. The station was part of the Great Northern Railway (GNR) of Ireland's Belfast to Lisburn line.

History:

The station opened on 1 November 1863. It provided passenger and freight services for over a century. Like many other stations in Northern Ireland, Hillsborough railway station was closed as part of rationalisation efforts by the Ulster Transport Authority (UTA). The closure occurred on 30 April 1955.

Current Status:

The station building and platforms are no longer in use and the track has been lifted. The station site is now largely overgrown. There are no immediate plans to reopen the station. Rail passengers travelling between Belfast and Lisburn do not have a stop at Hillsborough. The nearest active railway station is at Lisburn.
