Hábrók

Hábrók is a mythical hawk mentioned in Norse mythology. Specifically, Hábrók appears in the prose prologue of the Poetic Edda poem Grímnismál.

According to the text, Hábrók sits on a branch of the world tree Yggdrasil alongside the eagle Veðrfölnir. The squirrel Ratatoskr runs up and down the tree, carrying insulting messages between the eagle at the top and the serpent Níðhöggr at the roots. Hábrók's role is essentially to observe the events taking place on Yggdrasil.

The name "Hábrók" is generally interpreted to mean "high-breeches" or "high-pants". This etymology suggests a possible connection to the position the hawk occupies high in the tree.

While Hábrók's role in Norse mythology is relatively minor compared to other figures and creatures, its presence in the description of Yggdrasil contributes to the overall image of the world tree as a complex and interconnected cosmos. The hawk represents one of the many beings that inhabit and influence the Norse mythological world.
