Drifting Clouds (film)

Drifting Clouds (Finnish: Kauas pilvet karkaavat, literally "Far Away the Clouds Fly") is a 1996 Finnish tragicomedy film directed by Aki Kaurismäki. It is the first film in his "Finland" trilogy, followed by Juha (1999) and The Man Without a Past (2002).

The film tells the story of Ilona (Kati Outinen) and Lauri (Kari Väänänen), a married couple living in Helsinki who both unexpectedly lose their jobs. Ilona works as a head waitress in a high-end restaurant, while Lauri is a tram driver. When economic hardship hits, they face unemployment and struggle to maintain their dignity and find work.

Drifting Clouds explores themes of unemployment, economic recession, resilience, and the enduring power of love and companionship. Known for Kaurismäki's signature deadpan humor, minimalist style, and social commentary, the film presents a realistic portrayal of the struggles faced by ordinary people in the face of adversity.
