Howell began his professional career with Hertfordshire in 2002 before joining Northamptonshire in 2004. He has played primarily in List A and Twenty20 cricket for the county. He is known for his aggressive lower-order hitting and useful bowling variations.
His List A debut came in 2004, and he quickly became a regular in Northamptonshire's limited-overs sides. Howell has been a consistent performer in the T20 Blast, often contributing crucial runs and taking important wickets.
Although he has had opportunities in first-class cricket, his appearances have been limited, and his focus has primarily remained on the shorter formats of the game.
