Heroes' Square (Budapest)
Heroes' Square (Hungarian: Hősök tere) is one of the major squares in Budapest, Hungary, notable for its iconic statue complex featuring the Seven Chieftains of the Magyars and other important Hungarian national leaders, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It lies at the end of Andrássy Avenue, adjacent to City Park (Városliget).
The square plays a significant role in Hungarian history and identity. Construction of the monument began in 1896 to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the Magyar conquest of the Carpathian Basin. The square's statues depict figures central to Hungarian history and are considered symbolic representations of the nation's past struggles and triumphs.
The central column is topped by a statue of the Archangel Gabriel holding the Holy Crown of Hungary and a double apostolic cross. The two colonnades flanking the central monument feature statues of Hungarian kings, governors, and other historically significant figures. Each statue is labeled with the name and time period of the individual.
Heroes' Square is a popular tourist destination and a site for national celebrations and political gatherings. It is easily accessible by the Budapest Metro's M1 line (yellow line), with a station located directly beneath the square. The square, Andrássy Avenue, and City Park together form a UNESCO World Heritage site.
