David Armstrong (footballer, born 1954)

David Armstrong (born 13 January 1954 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, died 27 November 2022) was an English professional footballer who played as a midfielder.

Armstrong began his career at Middlesbrough, making his debut in 1972. He became a key player for the club, helping them gain promotion to the First Division in 1974. He was known for his goal-scoring ability from midfield, particularly his penalty taking and free kicks. He remained at Middlesbrough for nine years, making over 300 league appearances and scoring over 60 goals.

In 1981, Armstrong transferred to Southampton. He continued to be a regular in the side, contributing significantly to their success in the early 1980s. He helped Southampton finish as runners-up in the First Division in the 1983-84 season.

After a spell with Southampton, Armstrong moved to Bournemouth in 1987, where he served as player-manager. He retired from playing in 1988.

Armstrong also represented England at international level, earning three caps in 1980.
