James Wedderburn (bishop)

James Wedderburn (1488 – 1553) was a Scottish cleric and administrator, who served as Bishop of Dunblane from 1541 until his death.

Wedderburn was born in Dundee, the son of James Wedderburn, a merchant, and Janet Barry. He was educated at the University of St Andrews, graduating in 1509. He initially pursued a career in law, but later entered the priesthood.

He rose through the ranks of the church, holding various positions including Canon of Dunkeld and Rector of Flisk. His appointment as Bishop of Dunblane in 1541 marked the height of his ecclesiastical career. While Bishop, he oversaw the administration of the diocese and was involved in various legal and political matters.

Wedderburn was a figure of some influence in the turbulent politics of 16th-century Scotland. He lived through the early stages of the Scottish Reformation and, while not a prominent reformer himself, he did witness the growing tensions between Catholics and Protestants. He remained loyal to the Catholic faith throughout his life.

He died in 1553. He is not to be confused with his nephews, James Wedderburn, John Wedderburn, and Robert Wedderburn, who were significant figures in the Scottish Reformation, known for writing and promoting Protestant hymns and ballads.
