Team Seas
Team Seas is a collaborative fundraising campaign and environmental cleanup initiative launched in October 2021 by YouTubers MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) and Mark Rober. It follows a similar format to their previous collaboration, Team Trees, aiming to raise funds for ocean cleanup and conservation efforts.
The core objective of Team Seas is to remove 30 million pounds (13,600 metric tons) of plastic and trash from oceans, rivers, and coastlines around the world. For every dollar donated, one pound of trash is pledged to be removed.
The funds raised are split between two partner organizations: Ocean Conservancy and The Ocean Cleanup. Ocean Conservancy focuses on removing trash from coastlines and developing policies to prevent future pollution. The Ocean Cleanup deploys advanced technologies like their Interceptor vessels to extract plastic from rivers before it reaches the ocean.
The campaign utilized YouTube and social media platforms extensively, encouraging viewers to donate and participate in the initiative. MrBeast and Mark Rober created videos documenting the cleanup efforts and providing updates on the fundraising progress. Other YouTubers and influencers also joined the campaign, promoting it to their respective audiences.
Team Seas aims to not only remove existing pollution but also raise awareness about the global problem of ocean plastic and inspire individuals to take action to reduce their own environmental impact. The campaign concluded its initial fundraising goal in early 2022, successfully raising over $30 million. Continued donations are still accepted to further support ocean cleanup efforts.
