The Outline (website)

The Outline was an American online publication that covered culture, politics, and power. Founded by Joshua Topolsky and launched in December 2016, it distinguished itself through its distinctive visual design, featuring bold colors, minimalist typography, and a strong emphasis on original photography and illustration.

The website published a mix of reported features, essays, and opinion pieces, with a focus on topics ranging from internet culture and technology to social justice and global affairs. Its editorial voice was often described as progressive and critical.

The Outline was owned by Bustle Digital Group, which acquired it in March 2018. Prior to that, it was owned by Independent Media Group. Bustle Digital Group announced the closure of The Outline in August 2020. All existing content was archived.
