Nancy Davidson (artist)

Nancy Davidson (born 1943, Chicago, Illinois) is an American sculptor and installation artist known for her large-scale, inflatable fabric sculptures that often incorporate themes of gender, sexuality, power, and the body.

Davidson received her BFA from the University of Illinois and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and internationally.

Her work frequently employs humor and irony to challenge conventional notions of beauty and femininity. By using inflatable materials, she subverts the traditional permanence and gravitas associated with sculpture, creating works that are both visually striking and conceptually engaging. Davidson's sculptures often take the form of oversized, distorted body parts or suggestively shaped objects, prompting viewers to consider the complexities of gender identity and social expectations.

Davidson has received numerous awards and grants, including those from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. She is currently Professor Emerita of Art at Stony Brook University in New York.
