Jack Purvis (actor)
Jack Purvis (July 13, 1937 – November 21, 1997) was a British actor and performer, known for his roles in several Terry Gilliam films and for portraying multiple characters in the original Star Wars trilogy.
Purvis was born in London, England. Due to a form of dwarfism, his height was approximately 4 feet 3 inches (1.30 meters). He began his acting career in the 1970s and quickly became a recognizable figure in British cinema.
His collaborations with Terry Gilliam were particularly significant. He appeared in Time Bandits (1981), where he played Wally, one of the time-traveling dwarves; Brazil (1985), as Dr. Chapman; The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988), in a supporting role; and Jabberwocky (1977), among others. These roles often capitalized on his physical stature, but Purvis brought a memorable presence and comedic timing to each character.
In the Star Wars universe, Purvis portrayed several different characters. He was most notably a Jawa in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977). He also played an Ugnaught in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and a Teebo the Ewok in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983). These roles, while often masked, provided him with opportunities to work on a large-scale, internationally recognized film franchise.
Purvis's career extended beyond Gilliam and Star Wars. He appeared in films such as Flash Gordon (1980) and several television productions.
Jack Purvis died in 1997 as a result of complications from an accident. He is remembered as a versatile character actor who made a lasting impact on British and international cinema through his memorable performances.
