James Nixon (painter)

James Nixon (1741-1812) was a British portrait painter, known primarily for his work in miniature. He was born in London and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1778 until his death. While he painted portraits in oil, his miniature portraits, typically executed in watercolor on ivory, are considered his most significant contribution to the art world. Nixon was appointed Limner to the Society of Antiquaries and also held the position of portrait painter to the Duke of York. His subjects included members of the British aristocracy and prominent figures of his time. Examples of his work can be found in various public and private collections.
