Kurmuk (woreda)
Kurmuk is a woreda (district) in the Benishangul-Gumuz Region of Ethiopia. It is named after its principal town, Kurmuk. Part of the Asosa Zone, Kurmuk is bordered by the Blue Nile River on the north, by the Sudanese border on the west, by Oda Buldigilu on the south, and by Asosa on the east.
The woreda is primarily inhabited by the Gumuz people. Agriculture is the main economic activity, with crops like maize, sorghum, and sesame being cultivated. Livestock rearing is also a significant part of the local economy.
Accessibility within Kurmuk woreda is limited, especially during the rainy season, impacting trade and access to services. Infrastructure, including roads, schools, and healthcare facilities, is generally underdeveloped.
The area has faced challenges related to security, including cross-border issues due to its proximity to Sudan. Development efforts focus on improving agricultural practices, enhancing access to education and healthcare, and promoting peace and stability in the region.
