Summer Song (musical)
Summer Song is a musical with music by Sigmund Romberg, lyrics by Leo Robin, and a book by Sig Herzig and additional dialogue by William Shakespeare. It is a stage adaptation of the operetta Das Dreimäderlhaus (also known as Lilac Time in English), which was originally based on the life and music of Franz Schubert, although the connection is highly romanticized and bears little resemblance to historical accuracy.
The musical tells a fictionalized love story centered around the composer Franz Schubert. Set in Vienna, it typically involves Schubert's relationships with several young women, often including a central romantic interest who inspires his music. The plot often focuses on Schubert's struggles as a composer, his friendships, and the various romantic entanglements that influence his creative output.
Summer Song features many of Romberg's popular melodies, adapted from Schubert's works. The score commonly includes familiar tunes such as "Serenade," "Drinking Song," and "My Little Nest of Heavenly Blue." The musical enjoyed popularity in the mid-20th century and continues to be performed by amateur and professional theater companies, although its popularity has waned compared to its original success. Performances may sometimes involve adaptations to modernize the script or address concerns regarding historical accuracy or gender roles portrayed in the original production.
