Alex Fergusson (politician)

Alex Fergusson (April 8, 1949 – July 31, 2018) was a Scottish Conservative and Unionist politician. He served as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Galloway and Upper Nithsdale constituency from 1999 to 2011.

Fergusson is most notable for serving as the Presiding Officer (Speaker) of the Scottish Parliament from 2007 to 2011. He was the third person to hold this position and was elected unopposed following the 2007 Scottish Parliament election. As Presiding Officer, he oversaw debates and ensured the smooth running of parliamentary proceedings.

Before entering politics, Fergusson was a farmer in Ayrshire. He was educated at Eton College and the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester. He was involved in local government before his election to the Scottish Parliament.

After leaving parliament in 2011, Fergusson remained involved in public life. He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran in 2012, a position he held until his death.

Fergusson was widely respected across the political spectrum for his fairness and impartiality as Presiding Officer. His tenure was characterized by his commitment to upholding the dignity and authority of the Scottish Parliament.
