Socialist Party (England and Wales)
The Socialist Party (England and Wales) is a Trotskyist political party in the United Kingdom. It is part of the Committee for a Workers' International (CWI), a global international socialist organisation.
The party was founded in 1997, evolving from the Militant tendency, a Trotskyist group that had previously operated within the Labour Party. Following a period of increasing tensions and expulsions from Labour, Militant formally constituted itself as a separate party.
The Socialist Party advocates for a socialist transformation of society, arguing for the nationalization of major industries and banks under democratic workers' control and management. It campaigns on a range of issues including opposing austerity, fighting for workers' rights, opposing racism and sexism, and advocating for environmental protection.
The party participates in elections at local, national and European levels, often under the banner of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC), an electoral alliance initiated by the party. While it has not achieved significant parliamentary representation, it has had some success at the local council level.
The Socialist Party publishes a weekly newspaper called The Socialist and produces a range of pamphlets and books on socialist theory and current events. It maintains an active membership base throughout England and Wales, and is involved in organizing and participating in protests and campaigns. Its youth wing is known as Socialist Students.
