Nasiruddin Mahmud (eldest son of Iltutmish)
Nasiruddin Mahmud was the eldest son of Shams ud-Din Iltutmish, the third Sultan of Delhi's Mamluk dynasty. He was initially designated as Iltutmish's heir apparent due to his demonstrated skill and administrative ability. Iltutmish, breaking with tradition, preferred Nasiruddin Mahmud over his other surviving sons, recognizing his competence.
Nasiruddin Mahmud was assigned the iqta (administrative territory) of Oudh. He is remembered for his just rule and benevolent governance in this region. His tenure in Oudh was marked by peace and stability, contributing significantly to the overall prosperity of the Delhi Sultanate.
However, Nasiruddin Mahmud predeceased his father, Iltutmish. His early death necessitated a revision of Iltutmish's succession plans. The loss of his chosen heir deeply affected Iltutmish and ultimately led him to controversially nominate his daughter, Razia Sultana, as his successor, further cementing his legacy as an unconventional ruler. The details surrounding his death are not definitively known, but it is generally accepted that he died of natural causes during his administration of Oudh.
