Bernard Sumner
Bernard Sumner (born Bernard Dicken, 4 January 1956) is an English singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. He is best known as a founding member of the bands Joy Division and New Order.
Following the death of Joy Division vocalist Ian Curtis in 1980, Sumner, along with the remaining members of Joy Division, formed New Order. In New Order, Sumner transitioned from playing guitar to primarily handling lead vocal duties, while also continuing to contribute guitar and keyboard parts. He served as the band's frontman for the majority of their career.
Beyond his work with Joy Division and New Order, Sumner has also been involved in other musical projects. He formed the electronic music duo Electronic with Johnny Marr of The Smiths in 1988, releasing several albums and singles. He later formed Bad Lieutenant in 2007, a project featuring fellow New Order bandmate Phil Cunningham.
Sumner's musical style is characterized by his distinctive vocal delivery, often described as detached and melancholic. He is also recognized for his contributions to electronic music through his use of synthesizers and sequencers in New Order and Electronic. His songwriting often explores themes of alienation, isolation, and modern life.
