HMS Grecian (1838)
HMS Grecian was a Royal Navy brig-sloop launched in 1838. Built by Chatham Dockyard, she was a Cherokee-class vessel, designed by Sir William Symonds. These sloops were known for their relatively broad beam and shallow draft, making them suitable for coastal work and operations in shallow waters.
Service History:
HMS Grecian served primarily in the Mediterranean and South American stations. Her duties typically involved patrolling, suppressing piracy, and engaging in anti-slavery operations. While specific details of her active service are somewhat sparse in readily available records, the general duties of ships of her class during this period are well-documented. The Cherokee-class sloops were heavily involved in the suppression of the slave trade across the Atlantic, intercepting ships suspected of transporting slaves.
Fate:
HMS Grecian was sold out of service in 1852.
