Ivanov (film)
Ivanov is a 2010 British stage recording of Anton Chekhov's play Ivanov, directed for the stage by Michael Grandage. The production starred Kenneth Branagh in the title role of Nikolai Ivanov, a disillusioned and debt-ridden landowner in 19th-century Russia.
The play explores themes of ennui, social decay, and the struggles of the landed gentry facing economic and societal shifts. Ivanov is portrayed as a man burdened by guilt, depression, and a failing marriage to his Jewish wife, Anna (played by Gina McKee), who converted to Christianity for him. He is also pursued by the young and wealthy Sasha (played by Andrea Riseborough), creating further complications.
The recorded performance was part of the National Theatre Live program, which broadcasts stage productions to cinemas worldwide. The National Theatre Live broadcast allows audiences to experience high-quality theatrical productions that they might not otherwise have access to.
Critical reception of the stage production, and subsequently the recorded performance, was generally positive, with particular praise for Branagh's portrayal of the complex and often unlikeable Ivanov.
