Clapton (1973 album)

Clapton is the second studio album by British guitarist Eric Clapton, released in August 1973 on RSO Records. It followed his self-titled debut album, Eric Clapton, and continues in a similar vein of blues rock and country-influenced rock music.

The album was produced by Tom Dowd and features a core band of musicians including Yvonne Elliman, Jamie Oldaker, and Carl Radle, all of whom would become integral to Clapton's sound in the 1970s. It included several notable cover songs, such as "After Midnight" (J.J. Cale), which became a signature song for Clapton, and "Let It Grow," which became a staple in his live performances. The album also includes original compositions by Clapton, such as "Hello Old Friend."

Clapton reached number 13 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and was certified gold. While not considered a groundbreaking or experimental album, it solidified Clapton's post-Derek and the Dominos solo career and established his signature sound for the decade. The album's success cemented Clapton's transition from guitar hero to singer-songwriter.
