Olympic (band)

Olympic was a Czech rock band, formed in Prague in 1962. Initially a beat band called Karkulka, they became Olympic in 1963 and were instrumental in pioneering rock and roll in Czechoslovakia. They are considered one of the most influential and long-lasting bands in Czech music history.

The band's lineup has changed significantly over the decades, but guitarist and vocalist Petr Janda has remained the only constant member. Their music evolved from simple beat music to a more complex, progressive rock sound in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Olympic gained immense popularity during the communist era in Czechoslovakia, often reflecting the sentiments and experiences of the population through their music, albeit sometimes subtly due to censorship. Some of their most popular albums include Želva (1968), Pták Rosomák (1969), Jedeme dál (1978), and Ulice (1981).

After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, Olympic continued to record and perform, adapting to the new musical landscape while maintaining a strong following among older and newer generations of Czech rock fans. Their continued success is a testament to their enduring musicality and their ability to connect with audiences across different eras.

Olympic has released numerous studio albums, live albums, and compilations. They continue to tour and are regarded as a national treasure within Czech music culture.
