Charles Fillmore (Unity Church)

Charles Fillmore (August 22, 1854 – July 5, 1948) was an American mystic, spiritual leader, and co-founder, with his wife Myrtle Fillmore, of Unity, a New Thought Christian organization.

Fillmore was born near St. Cloud, Minnesota. A childhood injury left him with a permanently atrophied hip. He experimented with various religious and philosophical systems before adopting the teachings of the New Thought movement in the late 1880s. He was particularly influenced by the writings of Emma Curtis Hopkins.

Fillmore's teachings emphasized the power of positive thinking, the divinity of humanity, and the healing power of prayer and affirmations. He believed that through the application of these principles, individuals could overcome physical, mental, and spiritual challenges. He famously stated "Jesus Christ is the great Example, and we are to follow Him".

In 1889, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore began publishing "Modern Thought," a magazine dedicated to New Thought principles. They also founded the Unity School of Christianity, initially known as the Unity Society of Practical Christianity. Unity emphasizes a practical, applicable spirituality based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, interpreted within the context of New Thought philosophy.

Following Myrtle's death in 1931, Charles continued to lead the Unity movement until his death in 1948. His son, Lowell Fillmore, succeeded him as president of the Unity School of Christianity. Charles Fillmore's writings and teachings continue to be a central part of the Unity movement, influencing millions around the world. His notable works include "Talks on Truth," "The Twelve Powers of Man," and "Christian Healing."
