Kirihata-ji (Awa)
Kirihata-ji is the 10th temple on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, located in Awa, Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. Its official name is Jūhōzan Shōgakuin Kirihata-ji (十宝山 障楽院 切幡寺). The temple is dedicated to the Eleven-Faced Kannon.
According to legend, the temple was founded by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) in the early 9th century. The name "Kirihata" (切幡), meaning "cut cloth," originates from a story about a young woman who donated a piece of cloth she was weaving to Kobo Daishi, who then used it to create an image of the Kannon.
Kirihata-ji is known for its steep stone steps, numbering approximately 333, leading up to the main hall. This climb is considered a significant part of the pilgrimage experience at this particular temple. The temple complex includes the main hall (hondo), a Daishi hall, and a pagoda. The temple offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from its higher levels.
