Berkheide
Berkheide is a nature reserve located in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. It is situated between Katwijk and Wassenaar, along the North Sea coast. The area is characterized by a diverse landscape consisting of dunes, forests, heathland, and beaches.
Berkheide is part of the larger Meijendel nature reserve and is managed by the organization Dunea, which also uses the area for the extraction of drinking water. The dunes play a crucial role in the natural filtration of rainwater, contributing to the supply of clean drinking water for the surrounding region.
The area is a popular destination for recreation, offering opportunities for hiking, cycling, and bird watching. Numerous marked trails traverse the diverse landscape, allowing visitors to explore the natural beauty of Berkheide. Wildlife commonly observed in the area includes various bird species, rabbits, deer, and foxes. The coastal location also makes it an important area for migratory birds.
Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect the unique biodiversity and ecological value of Berkheide. Measures are taken to maintain the health of the dune ecosystem, prevent erosion, and preserve the natural habitats for the diverse flora and fauna found within the reserve. Access to certain areas may be restricted during sensitive periods, such as the breeding season, to minimize disturbance to wildlife.
