William Allan (English politician)

William Allan (1837 – 28 December 1903) was a British trade unionist and Liberal/Labour politician.

Born in Glasgow, Allan trained as an engineer. He became a prominent figure in the trade union movement, serving as General Secretary of the Associated Society of Engineers from 1874 to 1892. During his tenure, he oversaw significant growth in the union's membership and influence. He was a strong advocate for improved working conditions and fair wages for engineers.

In 1892, Allan was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Gateshead as a Liberal/Labour candidate. He represented the constituency until his death in 1903. In Parliament, he championed the interests of working-class constituents and supported legislation aimed at improving social welfare. He was known for his independent stance and willingness to cross party lines on issues he felt strongly about. His death led to a by-election in Gateshead, which was won by John Morrell.
