Mokoia

Mokoia Island is a small volcanic island in Lake Rotorua, in the North Island of New Zealand. It is a significant location in Māori history and mythology, particularly associated with the legend of Hinemoa and Tutanekai.

Geography and Geology:

Mokoia Island is roughly circular in shape and rises sharply from the lake. It is the exposed summit of a rhyolitic lava dome. The island is rich in geothermal activity, featuring hot springs and steaming vents. Its fertile volcanic soil supports a diverse range of flora.

History and Culture:

Mokoia Island holds deep cultural significance for the local Te Arawa iwi (tribe). The story of Hinemoa, who swam across Lake Rotorua to be with her lover Tutanekai, is central to the island's identity. According to the legend, Hinemoa used empty gourds to stay afloat during her swim.

The island was a fortified pā (Māori fortified village) in pre-European times, providing a strategic defensive position. It was also a center for Māori arts and learning.

Modern Status:

Mokoia Island is currently owned by the Mokoia Island Trust, which is responsible for its preservation and sustainable management. Guided tours are available, providing visitors with insights into the island's history, ecology, and cultural significance. Conservation efforts are underway to protect the native flora and fauna and to manage the impact of tourism. The island remains a place of great cultural and spiritual importance to the Te Arawa people.
