Sigma Phi

Sigma Phi is a social fraternity founded on March 4, 1827, at Union College in Schenectady, New York. It is the oldest Greek letter social fraternity in the United States that still exists as a social fraternity.

The fraternity is known for its literary focus and intellectual atmosphere, stemming from its founding principles which emphasized scholarship and the pursuit of knowledge. Unlike some fraternities which developed from earlier literary societies, Sigma Phi was from its inception a social fraternity based on Greek letter ideals.

Sigma Phi is organized into chapters, often referred to as "Lodges," at various colleges and universities across the United States. The fraternity operates under a constitution and bylaws, with a governing body typically composed of alumni and undergraduate members.

The fraternity's symbols include its Greek letter name (ΣΦ), colors, flag, coat of arms, and a motto which varies slightly among the active chapters. Rituals and traditions are an important part of the Sigma Phi experience, contributing to the bonds of brotherhood among its members.
